Spanish League Suffering Injuries during International Break

Spain and Barcelona are leaving the international break deeply frustrated after a terrible injury to Gavi, which, along with a slew of injuries suffered by La Liga sides during the domestic pause, has pushed the excessive football calendar to the top of the agenda.

It’s not just that players are getting hurt more frequently; many of these injuries are serious and potentially career-ending. Due to his injuries, Gavi will miss the rest of the season, the Euros, and the Olympics, while Ansu Fati has also been plagued by knee problems.

According to Cadena Cope, 18 players in Spain’s top two divisions are currently recovering from anterior cruciate ligament injuries or serious knee problems. In addition to Gavi, two key Real Madrid players were injured early in the season: Eder Militao in the first game and Thibaut Courtois just two days earlier.

Reinildo Mandava appears to be nearing a return from an ACL injury sustained in March of last year, while Vitolo has been out since May. Across town, Getafe have been without star striker Enes Unal since the latter stages of last season; he is expected to return in December or January, while Uruguayan midfielder Mauro Arambarri returned from a long-term absence last season, only to be ruled out for the rest of the season in recent weeks.

Villarreal is yet another prominent victim. Yeremy Pino, who suffered an ACL injury last week, will also miss the Euros, while Francis Coquelin is nearing the end of his recovery from the same problem in February. Elsewhere in La Liga, Aleksandar Sedlar of Alaves appears to be out for the season, while Toni Villa of Girona is still recovering from knee problems that began last April.

Real Oviedo have had a bad run of luck in Segunda, with Rodrigo Tarin, Alex Millan, and Mario Hernandez all suffering ACL injuries. Tenerife’s Jose Leon, Huesca’s Ruben Pulido, Burgos’ Esteban Saveljich, and on-loan Celta Vigo midfielder Miguel Baeza are all out for the season at Mirandes.

All parties appear to recognize that the issue is the workload placed on the players, but no one appears willing to cede ground or money to address it. UEFA will expand the Champions League beginning next year, while FIFA plans to expand both the Club World Cup and the World Cup over the next two years.
