Yuzvendra Chahal became the first bowler to reach 200 wickets in the IPL. Here’s his journey to the milestone in numbers:
17It took 17 years for a bowler to achieve the 200-wicket mark in IPL. RP Singh was the first to get 50 wickets in 2010. Lasith Malinga was the first to reach 100 and 150 wickets in 2013 and 2017, respectively.
Chahal became the third bowler to take 200 or more wickets in a tournament. Danny Briggs and Samit Patel were the two players who did it before him, both in England’s oldest T20 competition, the T20 Blast.
Chahal is one of three IPL spinners to earn the Purple Cap (most wickets in a season), with 27 for RR in 2022.
The previous record holders were Praghyan Ojha, who took 21 wickets for the now-defunct Deccan Chargers in 2010, and Imran Tahir, who got 26 wickets for CSK in 2019.

Chahal’s 27 wickets in IPL 2022 are the joint-most by a spinner in a single edition of the IPL, along with Rashid Khan’s 27 for Gujarat Titans in 2023. Only two Indian bowlers have taken more wickets in a single season: Harshal Patel (32 in 2021) and Mohammed Shami (28 in 2023).
Chahal has taken 20 or more wickets in a season five times, the most by any bowler and one more than Malinga, who has four. Sunil Narine and Rashid Khan are the next top spinners, each with three.
Chahal is one of four bowlers to have taken 50 or more wickets for two different franchises, with 139 wickets for RCB between 2014 and 2021 and 61 wickets in the last three years with RR. Chahal made his IPL debut for MI, the team against whom he scalped his 200th victim, in 2013 and bowled 0/34 in four overs in his sole match. Piyush Chawla (PBKS & KKR), Axar Patel (PBKS & DC), and Rashid Khan (SRH & GT) are the other players who have accomplished this feat.
Chahal has dismissed the third most southpaws in the IPL, trailing only his teammate R Ashwin and former bowling coach Lasith Malinga, who both have 61 dismissals.
