AS Roma confirm Leandro Paredes signing from PSG

Roma have announced the permanent signing of Argentine midfielder Leandro Paredes from Paris Saint-Germain.

Paredes returns to the Giallorossi following a three-year absence between 2014 and 2017, appearing in 54 games and scoring four goals.

Paredes, who spent time on loan at Empoli before joining Zenit St Petersburg in 2017, has signed a two-year contract with Jose Mourinho’s side until the conclusion of the 2024-25 season, and PSG will get more than €4 million (£3.4 million) for his sale.

“Coming back to Rome is always a special thing, but doing so now as a Roma player is even more special,” the South American told the club’s official website.

“I’d like to thank the fans for their warm welcome and Roma for bringing me back to the club where I began my European career.”
Last year was an extremely happy one for me because of the World Cup, so now I want to maintain tasting success, and I’m confident that I can accomplish so with this team.”

Since leaving Roma six years ago, Paredes has won a slew of domestic trophies with PSG between 2019 and 2023, including three Ligue 1 titles, three Trophee des Champions, two Coupe de Frances, and a Coupe de la Ligue.

In 117 games for the club, the former Boca Juniors teenager scored three goals and provided ten assists, although he dropped down the pecking order under Christophe Galtier and spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Juventus.

Paredes scored one goal and made one assist in 35 appearances for the Old Lady, and he appeared five matches for Argentina during their World Cup triumph in 2022.

“As soon as he heard that we were interested, Leandro made it clear that his target was to return to Roma,” Roma general manager Tiago Pinto said.

“His strong willpower convinced us that he should return to the Giallorossi, and we’re delighted to see him back in Roma colors.”

“He has matured and gained international experience since his first stint here, and we’re confident that this, combined with his knowledge of Italian football and technical abilities, will prove crucial and strengthen our squad.”

Paredes joins Evan Ndicka, Houssem Aouar, and Rasmus Kristensen as new Roma signings for the 2023-24 season, and he might make his second Serie A debut against Salernitana on Sunday.

Along with Paredes, Roma are close to completing the loan signing of the 29-year-old’s former PSG teammate Renato Sanches, who will have the option of becoming a permanent transfer in 2024.

Mourinho’s team made way for the new midfielders by selling Serbian veteran Nemanja Matic to Ligue 1 side Rennes following a year in Serie A.
