Super Liga giants Fenerbahçe has signed Turkish international Çağlar Söyüncü on loan from La Liga side Atletico Madrid, marking a significant milestone for the club.

The star defender, whose return to Turkey had been agreed upon in principle, arrived in Istanbul to complete the transfer, where he was greeted by Fenerbahçe manager Selahattin Baki and a devoted fan base.

The Kadiköy-based team announced in the late hours that they are bringing national player Çağlar Söyüncü to Istanbul for transfer negotiations as part of their efforts to strengthen their football squad in the 2023-2024 winter season. Stay tuned as we provide additional information to the public.”

The plane carrying Söyüncü arrived at Istanbul Airport around 2:30 a.m., where he was greeted by Fenerbahçe manager Selahattin Baki and a small group of enthusiastic fans.

Upon his arrival, Çağlar Söyüncü thanked the Turkish people for their support and stated, “I’ve done my part.” There isn’t much to say. We get along well with all of our friends here in Turkey. I hope we finish this journey with a championship.”

Söyüncü, 27, started his professional career at Aliağa and has since played for Altınordu, Freiburg, and Leicester City.

He has played 55 matches for the Crescent-Stars and scored twice.

Söyüncü joined Atletico Madrid after his contract with Leicester City expired in the summer of 2023, but his time in the Spanish capital has not gone as expected.

The reunion promises to infuse new energy into Fenerbahçe, who desperately need to strengthen their backline.

Caglar Soyuncu | Fenerbahce has announced the loan of an Atletico defender

Caglar Soyuncu, a central defender, has officially moved from Atlético to Fenerbahçe on loan. The agreement is valid until the end of the season, and no purchase option is included.

Soyuncu joined Atlético on a free transfer from Leicester City last summer. He has only appeared in six La Liga games for the Madrid club.

Interestingly, Soyuncu had never competed in the Turkish Süper Lig before. Before joining Freiburg in 2016, he played for Altinordu, a second-tier club in his home country.

Fenerbahçe is currently at the top of the Turkish league after 23 rounds, with 60 points.

During the winter transfer window, Fenerbahçe also signed experienced central defender Leonardo Bonucci, who came from Union Berlin on free.
