Declan Rice 'likely to return avoiding injury'

Declan Rice was replaced at half-time of Sunday’s draw between Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Rice had tests on Monday after experiencing back pain in the north London derby on Sunday, forcing him to leave at halftime.

Scans have confirmed that the problem is not serious, but the midfielder is still in pain and will not play in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup match at Brentford.

Rice will be evaluated further this week ahead of the trip to Bournemouth, as will Leandro Trossard, who missed the stalemate with Tottenham due to a minor muscle problem. Rice is expected to be available for Arsenal’s encounter against title rivals Manchester City on October 28. However, the champions will be missing Rodri, who was sent off against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta will host a news conference on Tuesday ahead of the trip to Brentford, when he is also expected to provide updates on the fitness of Gabriel Martinelli and Thomas Partey, while Jurrien Timber is a long-term absentee with a serious knee injury.

Rice’s replacement, Jorginho, made a mistake that led to one of the Spurs goals during the match. Arteta also revealed that Rice was suffering from a back ailment after the game.

He was really uncomfortable during the match.

“We had to remove him. We must evaluate him. It’s unusual for someone like him to appear.” Rice has played every game for Arsenal since joining from West Ham for a club-record fee of £105 million this summer, and he scored a late winner against Manchester United earlier this month.
