Getafe to sign Mason Greenwood Permanently?

Getafe are reportedly hoping to sign Manchester United’s English attacker Mason Greenwood on a permanent basis.
After being arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of rape and assault following online allegations from a woman, the 22-year-old is attempting to rebuild his career in Spain.

Greenwood was then arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making death threats before being released on bail, and he was immediately suspended by Manchester United after the allegations surfaced.

Greenwood was charged with one count of attempted rape, one count of assault causing actual bodily harm, and one count of engaging in controlling and coercive behavior after being arrested again for violating his bail conditions, and he was scheduled to stand trial in November 2023.

The Crown Prosecution Service, however, dropped all charges against Greenwood earlier this year, citing the “withdrawal of key witnesses” and “new evidence” that meant there was no longer a realistic chance of conviction.

After completing their own internal review, Manchester United were reportedly planning to re-integrate Greenwood into the squad, plans that were met with widespread criticism.

As a result, the club reversed their decision and informed the former England international that he would not be returning to Old Trafford, but they decided not to terminate his contract.

Getafe wants Ex-Manchester Untied’s Mason Greenwood Permanently?

Greenwood, whose contract at the Theatre of Dreams expires in 2025, was instead loaned out to Getafe, where he has made an impressive start with three goals and three assists in his first ten games.

The forward has started each of Getafe’s last five La Liga games and assisted Borja Mayoral’s second-minute goal in Saturday’s draw with Granada, and The Sun reports that the Spanish club wants to keep him beyond the end of the season.

While Greenwood is said to have no future at Manchester United, the Red Devils’ hierarchy would prefer to keep the 22-year-old on loan in La Liga, though Getafe will try to entice them with a tempting offer.

“Getafe have discussed trying to get United round the table so they can make an offer, which they believe could be attractive to United to get Mason off their wage bill,” a source familiar with the matter told the newspaper.

“The more likely scenario is that United agrees to extend the loan because they know Mason is happy and rebuilding his life.” They know he needs to mature and want him to — and the Getafe loan has worked out well for everyone so far.”

Greenwood rose through the Manchester United youth ranks to make 129 senior appearances for the club. He set a record by scoring 35 goals and providing 12 assists in the process at the club.

Man United’s current wingers have flattered to deceive this season, with Marcus Rashford, Antony, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, Mason Mount, and Facundo Pellistri scoring just two goals between them in all competitions.

Nonetheless, Erik ten Hag’s side won back-to-back league games with a 1-0 victory over Luton Town on Saturday, moving up to sixth in the table heading into the November international break.
