Heinrich Klaasen announces retirement from TEST Cricket

Heinrich Klaasen has retired from Test cricket but will remain available for white-ball competitions.
On Monday (8 January), South Africa’s big-hitting batter Heinrich Klaasen announced his retirement from Test cricket.

Klaasen, a prolific limited-overs performer for South Africa, appeared in four Tests during his career. He made his debut against India in Ranchi in 2019 and last appeared against the West Indies in 2023.

In four games, the keeper-batter scored 104 runs at an average of 13. His best performance was a 35 against Australia in Sydney.

The batter announced his retirement from his preferred format but will remain available for selection in the limited-overs game.

“After a few sleepless nights wondering if I am making the right decision, I have decided to retire from red-ball cricket,” the cricketer said in a statement.

“It was a difficult decision to make because it is by far my favorite game format.” The battles I’ve had on and off the field have shaped me into the cricketer I am today.

“It’s been a fantastic journey, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to represent my country.” My baggy Test cap is the most valuable cap I’ve ever been given.”

This is South Africa’s second major retirement announcement, following opener Dean Elgar’s retirement following the two-game Test series against India.
