Ivan Perisic suffers ACL Injury

The midfielder came off the bench for Tottenham on Saturday and was instrumental in the club’s comeback against Sheffield United, but he will now need surgery and will most likely miss the remainder of the season.

The club announced on X that the Croatia international suffered the injury during non-contract training ahead of the club’s north London rivalry against Arsenal this weekend.

Perisic, 34, was a significant member of Antonio Conte’s squad last season, appearing often at wing back for Tottenham Hotspur, who finished eighth in the Premier League.

Since Ange Postegoclou arrived, he has been more of a squad player, but he has been utilized as a winger in a 4-3-3 formation under the Australian.

On Saturday, he came off the bench in the 80th minute at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, taking a corner and assisting fellow sub Richarlison to score the equalizer before Dejan Kulusevski’s winner.

He has appeared in six games for Tottenham this season, including one in the Carabao Cup in the club’s penalty shootout loss to Fulham, but his season is likely done.

Perisic, 34, is out of contract in the summer and may have played his final game for the club he joined from Inter Milan last season.

He has made 50 appearances for Tottenham, scoring one goal since joining Conte’s side on a free transfer.

He had spent seven years in Italy with Inter Milan, making slightly under 250 appearances with a loan transfer to Bayern Munich wedged in the middle.

During his career, he has also played for Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund, and Club Brugge.

The veteran has also made 129 appearances for Croatia, and was a key player of the group that came second in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

He is third all-time in appearances for his country, after only Luka Modric (168) and Darijo Srna (134), and appeared to be a guarantee for the squad at this summer’s European Championships.

He now faces a race against time to be ready for the competition, which begins on June 14 in Germany and runs through July 14.

With the competition in nine months, Perisic may be able to compete, but he will need months of rehabilitation to recuperate from the injury once the surgery is over.
