Jason Steele pens new contract with Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton & Hove Albion have announced that goalkeeper Jason Steele’s contract has been extended until June 2026.

The 33-year-old joined the Seagulls from Sunderland in the summer of 2018 and had to settle for a backup role for the majority of his first four seasons at the club, making only nine first-team appearances.

Steele, on the other hand, has since been given regular first-team opportunities in 2023 under head coach Roberto De Zerbi and played a role in helping Brighton finish sixth in the Premier League and secure European football for the first time in their history in the second half of last season.

Steele took over as De Zerbi’s number one goalkeeper after the Italian manager decided to drop Robert Sanchez in March, and he appeared in 14 of Brighton’s final 15 Premier League games last season, keeping six clean sheets.

Following the sale of Sanchez to Chelsea in the summer, Brighton spent around £17 million to sign 21-year-old Bart Verbruggen, who has been rotating between the sticks with Steele so far this season.

Steele has been given the nod to start nine of Brighton’s first 14 games in all competitions in 2023-24, with Verbruggen filling in for the remaining five.

Steele remains an important member of De Zerbi’s first-team squad, and he has decided to commit his future to Brighton by signing a new three-year contract.

“I’m overjoyed for Jason. “He’s a fantastic player,” De Zerbi told the official website of Brighton.

“Jason is a key player for us, on and off the field,” technical director David Weir added. His attitude, leadership, and what he brings to this club every day have all played a significant role in our progress during his time here.

“I am thrilled that his loyalty and patience is now paying off, and that we have extended his stay with us through until at least June 2026.”

Steele, who has extended his contract with Brighton for the second time in nine months, is one of eight senior players to sign new contracts with the Seagulls in 2023, following Kaoru Mitoma, Lewis Dunk, Solly March, Adam Lallana, Evan Ferguson, Joel Veltman, and Jeremy Sarmiento, the latter of whom signed a new five-year deal two weeks ago.

Brighton’s No.23 is in line to make his 40th appearance for the club when De Zerbi’s side travels to Goodison Park on Saturday to face Everton in the Premier League.
