Bayer Leverkusen advanced to the DFB-Pokal final after defeating Fortuna Dusseldorf 4-0, keeping them on track to win the German league and cup double.

Jeremie Frimpong, Amine Adli, and Florian Wirtz scored in the first half as Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen cruised past second-tier opponents at the BayArena.

Wirtz added a fourth penalty as Xabi Alonso’s side, who are also in the Europa League quarterfinals, extended their unbeaten streak to 40 games in all competitions this season.

Dusseldorf’s Bundesliga away record – seven victories and four draws in 14 games – had given them semi-final hopes, but this was a considerably tougher test than they were used to.

Within four minutes, Emmanuel Iyoha’s last-ditch tackle denied Frimpong an early lead.

Marlon Mustapha fired a poor shot at the other end, but the unmarked Frimpong put Leverkusen ahead after seven minutes with a thunderous blast into the roof of the net.

After 20 minutes, Leverkusen extended their lead with a fast counter-attack from deep inside their penalty area.

Wirtz released Adli, whose pinpoint low strike into the corner of the net left goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier with no chance.

There was a huge distance between the teams, and Leverkusen hammered home their advantage after 35 minutes.
