Napoli could break ways with manager Walter Mazzarri before their Champions League match against Barcelona on Wednesday.
Mazzarri has only managed five victories in 16 games across all competitions for Napoli since succeeding Rudi Garcia in November. On Saturday, the reigning Serie A winners scored late to tie Genoa 1-1.
According to journalist Matteo Moretto, the club is “seriously considering” dismissing Mazzarri, and the Italian coach’s departure might happen even before they face Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 match on Wednesday.
In anticipation of the Italian’s departure, Napoli have already reached out to Francesco Calzona, the coach of Slovakia’s national team. Calzona, who formerly worked as an assistant to Maurizio Sarri and Luciano Spalletti at Napoli, would now coach both the Italian team and The Falcons.
After departing AS Roma last month, Jose Mourinho had strong ties to the Napoli post, but the move never happened. According to some sources, the Portuguese coach was scheduled to meet with club president Aurelio De Laurentiis to explore a possible move.
It is unclear whether Mazzarri will be on the bench for the club’s forthcoming European showdown against the Catalan giants. After defeating the defending Spanish champions, the Blues will play Cagliari in the Serie A on February 25.
