Shubman Gill has been named captain of the Gujarat Titans, following the trade of Hardik Pandya to the Mumbai Indians ahead of this year’s IPL auction.
Shubman Gill has had an outstanding year, amassing 2118 runs from 45 matches across formats, including seven centuries and ten fifties. His yearly average is a whopping 50.42.
“I am delighted and proud to assume the Captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team,” Gill said upon the announcement. We’ve had two outstanding seasons, and I’m excited to lead the team with our exciting brand of cricket.”
He has played a key role in GT’s success since its debut in the IPL. Last season, he hit a 60-ball 129 against the Mumbai Indians, which was the highest by a batter in the IPL playoffs, surpassing Virender Sehwag’s 122 for Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) against the Chennai Super Kings in 2014.
It was also the third-highest T20 playoffs score, trailing Chris Gayle’s 146 for Rangpur Riders in 2017 and Tamim Iqbal’s 141 for Comilla Victorians in 2019.
Gill also had three centuries in the previous IPL. Only Virat Kohli (2016) and Jos Buttler (2022) had four goals in a single IPL season.
