Aiden Markram will lead South Africa’s assault for the first time in an ICC competition when the Proteas announce their squad for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 in the United States and the West Indies. Aiden Markram is the new T20I captain of the Proteas.

Notable additions include Quinton de Kock and Anrich Nortje, who were recently taken off Cricket South Africa’s main contract list.

Following his 2022 Test Cricket World Cup retirement, De Kock announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs) following the 2023 Cricket World Cup. Nortje has been out from international play since September 2023 due to a back injury.

Ryan Rickelton and Ottniel Baartman, the squad’s two uncapped T20I players, profited from strong  performances in the last SA20 competition.

Rickelton was the tournament’s top run-scorer for MI Cape Town, with 530 runs at an average of 58.88 and a strike rate of 173.77, while Baartman claimed 18 wickets in eight matches for reigning champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

Along with the youngsters, the Proteas have a formidable batting core that includes Markram, De Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, and the talented Tristan Stubbs.

Kagiso Rabada and Nortje will lead the pace battery, with Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee providing backup, while the frontline spinners will be Bjorn Fortuin, Keshav Maharaj, and Tabraiz Shamsi.

South Africa Squad for T20 World Cup

Speaking about the squad, coach Rob Walter stated: “Selecting this group was extremely difficult given the amount of T20 cricket played recently and the form that has been on display. I’d want to congratulate Ryan and Ottniel, both uncapped players, on their selection.

“We saw some fantastic performances from our players in 2024, which made my job quite difficult. Nonetheless, I am proud and sure that we have picked the strongest possible group, which will undoubtedly succeed in the West Indies and the United States.

South Africa’s T20 World Cup campaign begins on June 3 against Sri Lanka in New York.

South Africa’s team includes Aiden Markram (c), Ottniel Baartman, Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, David Miller, Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton, Tabraiz Shamsi, and Tristan Stubbs.

Travelling reserves include Nandre Burger and Lungi Ngidi.
