The President of La Liga wants Greenwood to stay

The president of La Liga says he “doesn’t care” about Mason Greenwood’s background and hopes the Manchester United forward will stay in Spain beyond this season.

The 22-year-old was charged with attempted rape and violence, but the Crown Prosecution Service said in February last year that the case was dropped.

He joined Getafe on loan last summer, and La Liga chief Javier Tebas is so impressed with him that he hopes he remains for the long term.

“He’s doing really well as a player at Getafe, and I hope he continues to be successful and stays in Spanish football because that’s always good for us,” Tebas told at press conference.

“He’s just another player. He had a past, but it was one over which we had no control. As he was innocent, he received no punishment. Not everything about us is up for judgment. If we did that, we would not have any teams.

“As a lawyer, I believe it is critical to emphasize that he is not condemned. He was acquitted in the UK. Should we have reopened the case in Spain? Do I understand the case in great detail? No.

“Greenwood was not condemned, so I don’t care.”

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Manchester United’s co-owner, stated last week that a new decision on Greenwood would be made this summer, now that Ineos had been given responsibility of football operations at Old Trafford.

Reports last year that United intended to keep him following an internal probe sparked public outrage, and Ratcliffe admits that a decision on what happens next will have to be taken when Greenwood returns, but claims nothing has been resolved.

“It’s evident we need to make a decision. “No decision has been made,” Ratcliffe stated during a media briefing to commemorate the conclusion of his purchase of a minority share in United.

When asked if the Greenwood issue would be a “new decision,” Ratcliffe replied, “Yes, we will. Absolutely. We will make a decision and justify it, whichever way.”

He said: “He’s on loan obviously, but he’s not the only one – we’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with and we have to make a decision on, so we will do that.”
