Thiago Silva made the announcement on Monday, saying he is open to returning to Chelsea “in another role.”

“Goodbyes are for those who leave and do not return,” he stated in a message to Chelsea supporters. “I intend on coming back one day.”

Silva joined Chelsea in 2020, when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain expired. He stated that he only planned to stay at the English team for one season.

He continued to play for the club after winning the Champions League at the end of his first season there. His sons are now playing for Chelsea’s youth teams.

“It’s a source of great pride to be a part of the Chelsea family — literally because my sons are here,” Silva said in a statement. “I hope they can continue their careers here at this victorious club that many players wish to be part of.”

Chelsea has five league games remaining this season, but is in ninth place after an uneven season under first-year coach Mauricio Pochettino.

The Brazil defender was substituted in the 90th minute of Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at Aston Villa on Saturday due to a groin injury, raising the prospect that it was his final game for the club.

Silva said in an impassioned address to supporters, “Chelsea means a lot to me.” I came here with the aim of remaining for a year, but it ended up being four years. Not only for me, but for my entire family.

“My sons play for Chelsea, therefore it gives me great joy to be a part of the Chelsea family – literally because they are here. I hope they can continue their careers at this successful club, which many players want to be a part of.

“I believe I gave my all to all I did here during the past four years. Unfortunately, everything has a beginning, middle, and end. That does not imply that this is the end. I hope to keep the door open so that I can return in the near future, but in a different job here. But it’s an indescribable love. I can just say “thank you.”

Silva continued: “Obviously, when I got here, it was during the epidemic, so there were no fans in the stadium. But it became something very precious to me thanks to social media, and as the people returned to the stadium and life resumed normalcy, I began to feel a lot of affection and admiration for my narrative and my beginning here.
