Wigan Athletic AFC have signed Liverpool defender Luke Chambers on a season-long loan.

Wigan Athletic AFC signed Luke Chambers

After making his first four senior appearances for the Reds in the first half of the season, the 19-year-old drops to League One. He made his debut against Leicester City in the third round of the EFL Cup.

Jurgen Klopp has given Chambers his Liverpool baptism, and he has appeared in three Europa League matches, earning starts against Toulouse and Union SG, as well as four Premier League appearances.

Due to the injuries to Andrew Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, Chambers was the only recognized left-back in Klopp’s ranks for a short time, but the experienced Joe Gomez was preferred on that side of the backline.

Despite their defensive injury crisis, Liverpool have allowed Chambers to leave on loan, following Fabio Carvalho, Marcelo Pitaluga, and Vitezslav Jaros out on a temporary deal.

“I’m overjoyed to sign here. “I’ve come here to help the team win games and get as far as we can in the league,” Chambers told Wigan’s official website.

“I came to watch a few games because I thought the style of play was good, and I felt right at home.” The Club has a sizable fan base, which adds to its allure.

“Now it’s all about gaining experience.” I had a taste of first-team football in January, so now it’s time to build on that and advance my career. I can’t wait to get started, to show the fans what I’m capable of, and to hit the ground running.”

Shaun Maloney, head coach of the Latics, praised the teenager’s versatility and hinted that he could play in a central role over the next six months, saying: “I’m really happy to get Luke through the door.”

“He’s the ideal profile for that left-back position; he can play in a three as a centre-back or as a full-back, he has excellent technical ability, and he’s physically strong.” We require competition.

“We’ve relied very heavily on Sean Clare and Steven Sessegnon, and now we’ve got Luke Robinson back, so it gives Tom Pearce time to get back to his best, but overall, I think Luke’s got a lot of talent, and I’m really happy to have him here.”

Finally, Gregor Rioch stated, “We are very excited to sign a player of Luke’s calibre and quality, and I’d like to personally thank Liverpool FC for their support in allowing us to bring Luke to our Football Club.” He will be an excellent addition to our team, and I eagerly await his development in the coming months.”

Chambers has been with Liverpool since he was six years old and had a productive loan spell with Kilmarnock in the second half of the 2022-23 season, setting up one goal in 16 games.

In November, he earned his first two caps for England’s Under-20s, and he was a member of the Under-19 squad that won the European Championship in 2022, coming on as a second-half substitute in the final against Israel.
