After a productive time at Burnley, Ian Maatsen had hoped to solidify his place in Mauricio Pochettino’s new-look starting lineup.

Instead, the Netherlands Under-21 international has only made three starts and 12 substitute appearances across all competitions.

There are only eighteen months remaining on his contract, so discussions have been held about how to maximize his advancement. Chelsea is willing to let him go in January.

Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital, Chelsea’s co-owners, are under pressure to ensure that the company continues to comply with FFP regulations throughout the month, aware of the consequences if they do not.

But Dortmund couldn’t match Chelsea’s reportedly over £25 million demands for Maatsen, so a mutually acceptable compromise was struck.

The West Londoners have given the 21-year-old permission to spend the rest of the season at the Westfalenstadion.

In exchange, Maatsen has helped Chelsea strengthen their position in negotiations over a future fee by extending his contract by another year, taking him to 2026.

Ian Maatsen | Playing Career

Maatsen was given a starring role for the Blues during preseason, frequently playing at center-midfield or on the right wing. The Dutchman impressed and looked set to be a key player for Chelsea this season, but he’s only played 199 minutes after 20 games in the new Premier League season.

While Maatsen’s opportunities may not have indicated it, Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is a big fan. Mauricio Pochettino told the club’s official website over the summer: “I am so happy with him.” He is a versatile player who can play in a variety of positions.

“He has talent, he understands the game, and he is a brilliant player.” Yes, he is in my plans so far. As I previously stated, I am very pleased with him because of his attitude, commitment, and understanding of the game.”

Maatsen will be determined to make an immediate impact in the Bundesliga after struggling to establish himself in the English Premier League. Following his arrival in Dortmund, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl lavished praise on the Chelsea star.

“Due to our current personnel situation, we have decided to take action again in the left-back position in the winter,” he explained to the club’s official website. “Ian fits our requirements profile because of his strengths.”
