Sergino Dest has sustained an ACL  injury

Sergino Dest, a United States defender, will miss the Copa América this summer due to an ACL tear.

Sergino Dest sustained the injury while exercising with PSV Eindhoven on April 20. The club initially described it as a severe knee injury. Dest, 23, has subsequently announced on social media that he has a torn ACL, an injury that will certainly keep him out for the remainder of the year.

“I tore my ACL. Hearing [the news] was extremely painful. I will be out for a long time. I will soon have surgery and then work on my recovery. It will be difficult for me, but I know that I will come out of this stronger, that’s for sure. For everyone else, it’s now hope for the best and find the old version of myself again.”

It is a cruel blow for Dest, who has performed admirably for PSV this season. The team is on the edge of winning the Eredivisie, needing one point this weekend to claim their 25th Dutch crown. Dest has played an important role in that run, having joined the club on loan from Barcelona before of this season.

PSV has the option of signing Dest on a permanent transfer this summer, but both the player and the club must agree. Dest was supposed to play a key role for the USMNT in the Copa América this summer, but he will now focus on his rehabilitation from this major setback.

The US hopes to put on a display for its home fans in this year’s Copa America.

While they are not considered favorites to win the competition, they will need all of their players to perform well. Unfortunately, one crucial player they had intended to rely on has been ruthlessly killed by injury.
