Newcastle United’s top goal in the upcoming transfer window will be to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Newcastle United 'makes' Kalvin Phillips major target

The 28-year-old has struggled for first-team minutes since joining City from Leeds United in the summer of 2022.

Phillips scored his first goal for the Citizens in the Champions League on Wednesday night. He scored the goal from the penalty spot in a 3-2 victory over Red Star Belgrade.

However, the England international has only made four Premier League substitute appearances this season, totaling 89 minutes of top-flight action.

Newcastle United are looking for a new central midfielder in January and have identified Phillips as a possible signing.

Injuries plagued the Magpies early in the 2023-24 season as they attempted to compete in Premier League and UCL games.

Sandro Tonali is currently serving a 10-month ban for violating the Italian FA’s betting regulations, so Eddie Howe is looking for midfield reinforcements.

Phillips is said to be the former Bournemouth manager’s preferred January arrival at St James’ Park.

After finishing bottom of a difficult Group F in the Champions League, which included Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, and AC Milan, the Magpies are expected to invest heavily in the New Year in order to secure a top-four finish once again.

Newcastle are reportedly not alone in their admiration for Manchester City’s Phillips, with Manchester United and Serie A powerhouse Juventus also expressing an interest in the Englishman.

The midfielder’s circumstances at the Etihad are being monitored by the red half of Manchester. However, a cross-city move is reportedly unlikely anytime soon.

Guardiola recently apologized to Phillips for his lack of first-team minutes since leaving Elland Road, stating that the ex-Leeds man does not belong on a first-choice Citizens squad.

Phillips, who played in a much-changed Man City XI on Wednesday night, is set to hand over his place in the team to Rodri on Saturday afternoon when the champions host Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
